World Puppetry Day

World Puppetry Day

At the initiative of the international association of puppeteers UNIMA, since 2003, every year on March 21st, we celebrate World Puppetry Day. On that day, the international and Slovenian delegacy were announced, and events for a wider recognition of puppetry art in our society in puppet theatres around the whole world are prepared.

In the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, we will mark the World Puppetry Day with a show Open the Owl on Friday, March 20that 18:30 and on Saturday, March 21st at 17:30 at the Hribar hall at the Ljubljana castle. Cooperating with the Ljubljana castle, we have prepared a program From stage to museum which includes a combined ticket for a funicular ride, viewing of the show Open the Owl and a guided tour of the Museum of Puppetry.

The French director Renaud Herbin found the inspiration for the show Open the Owl in the storage of the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, where he was fascinated by miniature marionettes from 1936, created by the pioneer of Slovenian puppetry Milan Klemenčič. Using Klemenčič’s marionette heritage, he situated the tradition of puppetry art in a context of contemporary performance practices. The show has English subtitles, and we recommend it to young (15+) and adult spectators. The show is performed with English surtitles.

The visitors will walk on the theatre stages, which the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre has 6 of, they will visit the workshop, where puppets are made, they will take a peek at the backstage and at Martin Krpan, who greets passersby from the roof window every hour.
