Have you ever wondered how a puppet is made or what enables it to move on stage? Puppet in an X-ray invites visitors to look inside a puppet and discover what lies beneath its surface. Through an exceptionally playful approach and the use of X-ray images, the exhibition reveals— quite literally—the deepest secrets hidden inside puppets. Nails, pins, springs, weights, wires and other invisible construction elements are brought to light before our eyes.Beyond their visual fascination, X-rays are also an invaluable tool in the preservation of puppetry heritage. They play an important role in the conservation, restoration and reproduction of historic puppets, allowing experts to study their internal structures without damaging the originals.
The exhibition features a number of iconic Estonian puppets, presented in Slovenia for the first time. For its Ljubljana edition, the exhibition has been expanded to include highlights from Slovenia's own puppetry heritage. Visitors will be able to see puppets and their X-ray images from the legendary productions Speckles the Ball (1951) and The Little Witch (1967). These X-rays were created before puppet engineers began producing replicas of the original puppets, which are now preserved as part of the museum collection and can no longer perform on stage. Examining the puppets' internal structures provided valuable insight into their construction and made it possible to create highly accurate replicas; the very puppets that continue to appear on stage today.
